How to Measure for Curtains

With Blinds4You, measuring for your beautiful new curtains is easy. Just follow this step-by-step guide, taking care to double check as you go and look out for some handy tips to help you save time too.

This guide works for:

Curtains with Poles

Curtains with Tracks

Here’s our step-by-step guide to get you started for measuring curtains:

1. Get the right tools

Simple enough start. Make sure you have the following:

  • Quality Steel Tape Measure
  • Pencil or Pen
  • Notepad

2. Measuring the right curtain width

It is important that you measure the length of the curtain track or pole and use this as your curtain width. We will use this to work out the curtain fabric. Handy Tip – if you are fitting a new track or pole, we recommend you extend it between 150-200mm on either side of your window and at least 150mm above the top.

Curtain Poles:
For your width, take the distance of your pole between any end caps/finials.

Curtain Tracks:
For your width, measure the full length of the track from end to end.

Overlapping Tracks:
Measure the full length of the track from end to the overlap (a) plus the length of the overlap (b).  Add the two distances together for your width. Note the track without overlap can be measured as normal.

3. Measure the curtain drop

Before you measure the drop, decide where you want the curtain to hang to. Usually its to floor, window sill or just below sill. For the best look, we recommend your curtains finish:

15mm above the floor

150-200mm below the sill

20 - 30mm above the radiator

15mm above the sill

This gap is to prevent drag of fabric which can mark or fray the material.

4. Measuring for different types of curtains

Drop for Pencil or Pinch Pleat Curtains on a Pole:
Measure your drop from the bottom of your curtain rings to where you want the curtain to finish. Handy Tip – you may wish to cover the curtain rings, in which case start the drop from the top of the rings.

Drop for Pencil or Pinch Pleat Curtains on a Track:
Measure your drop from the top of the track to where you want the curtain to finish.

Drop for Eyelet Curtains on a Pole:
Measure your drop from the top of the pole to where you want the curtain to finish. Our Eyelet curtains can fit poles upto 30mm diameter. Note during manufacture, we will add 30mm of fabric above the eyelet.

5. Check your measurements

Check, check and check again! It’s important you double (if not triple) check the measurements. The last thing you want is to supply us with incorrect measurements and receive curtains that don’t fit.
