How to Measure for Blinds

So, you’ve considered purchasing and fitting your own blinds. Excellent. This is where we can help. Measuring for blinds can be simple if you have the right tools and clear guidance, as blind and window types can differ. Each product is measured in a slightly different way which is why we have created specific measuring guides for each product so make sure you use the correct measuring guide.

Don’t be too disheartened if you’re new to DIY or not very confident. All you need to know at this stage is width and drop (length) and a choice of two fittings.

Please note that this measuring guide is intended to provide general information only. Please refer to the specific guide for the blind type and/or window type (e.g. roller, vertical, box bay, etc) prior to ordering to ensure you have accurate measurements. Here’s our handy guide to get you started for measuring blinds:

1. Get right tools

It’s important that we get the right measurements so that your blind fits perfectly. Therefore, we’d recommend you use:

  • Metal Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Notepad

2. Where will the blind hang?

Next, you need to decide where the blind will hang in order to get the correct measurements. There are two options for your blinds: inside the recess or outside.

Measuring for Inner recess

This is the most common fitting of blinds. What you’ll need here is to measure three different widths within the recess: the top, middle and bottom. Always ensure you measure the full width of the recess and not just the window frame and write down the smallest of the three

To measure the drop (length), follow the same process as described above, however taking a measurement at the left, middle and right and write down the smallest.

It’s important to remember we always use millimeters (mm) when measuring for blinds so please note down your measurements in mm.

Deductions will be made when recess is selected.

Measuring Outer Recess

If you want your blind to cover the whole window recess then measure the width by deciding where you’d like the blind to cover, and write this down in mm.

Next, you need to measure the drop. Again, measure from where you want the rail to be at the top, and where the blind will end. Jot this down in mm’s and you’re good to go.

3. Check your measurements

This might sound obvious, however, the need to check and then check again, is vitally important so that you don’t make any mistakes and we receive the correct measurements for your blind. We don’t want to leave you disappointed with an ill-fitted blind.
