Venetian Blinds are an incredibly popular and practical window blind, perfect for any room in the home. They are made from overlapping horizontal slats that are typically lowered, rotated, and drawn together using a cord or bar. The slats are typically manufactured using materials such as aluminium, plastic, or wood and move in unison through a series of wires that run through the blinds.
Over the past fifty years, Venetian Blinds have become one of the UK’s most popular window coverings, and are used extensively across homes and businesses due to their practicality, durability, cost-effectiveness and style.
Venetian Blind History
Although the name suggests that this variety of blinds is of Italian or Venetian origin, it is thought that they may well have originated in Persia where strips of cloth were used to control the amount of light entering a room. The reference to Venice came when Venetian traders discovered the window blinds and brought them across to Europe from where their popularity soared. In France the blinds are still called ‘les persienes’ as a direct reference to their Perisan heritage.
Whatever their true heritage, Venetian Blinds remain to this day an incredibly popular and practical blind, suiting period properties, modern contemporary homes and offices alike. An ever-expanding number of finishes, colours and features, ensures that Venetian Blinds will remain on-trend for many years to come.
What are the benefits of Venetian Blinds?
Venetian Blinds have a huge number of advantages over other blinds or window coverings, these include:
Light adjustment. Venetian Blinds allow you to easily adjust the amount of light entering your room and also the direction in which the light is projected. This makes it simple to regulate the amount of light in your room as the sun moves position. Venetian Blinds can also be easily raised allowing light to flood the room. The ability to adjust and control the blinds can be equally as effective in providing privacy within the home both during the day and at night.
Durability. They are also incredibly durable and easy to clean so they are perfect in bathrooms and kitchens where moisture and dirt can accumulate more easily. Most Venetian Blinds have wipe-clean surfaces, so any spills or dirt build-ups can be removed in seconds.
Practicality. The most effective way to buy Venetian Blinds is ‘made to measure’, allowing them to correctly fit windows of any dimensions. Should a window be too wide then a practical and effective solution would be to install the blinds in series. This allows you to adjust each blind independently and to control the light even more effectively.
Moisture resistance. Venetian Blinds (Metal and Faux Wood) are perfect for fitting high moisture areas of the home, such as kitchens and bathrooms, where other window coverings would not be practical.
Fitting. Venetian Blinds are super-easy to fit, utilising a simple bracket system that can be easily attached to a baton, window frame or wall. Perfect Fit blinds (similar to Venetian Blind construction) come fixed within a frame which also makes them simple to fit and create an integrated look with the existing window frame.
Finishes. Venetian Blinds are manufactured in a variety of materials and finishes, allowing consumers to choose a blind that meets their needs, their room colour scheme and their budget.
*It is worth noting that window blind cords can be a risk to babies and small children who might injure themselves on looped blind cords. Cord tidies or tensioners (safety devices) must be attached to a wall and used to hold the cords tight and keep them away from children as per the legal requirements.
What types of Venetian Blinds are there?
Wooden Blinds
Wooden Venetian Blinds are constructed using real wooden slats and have the quality and luxury associated with a natural product. Each wooden slat has increased depth and colour with natural wood grains showing through. Wooden blinds have great insulation properties and are known to reduce solar heat gain, helping to regulate room temperatures. They are great for areas of the home with low humidity, such as Living Rooms, Dining Room and Bedrooms.
Faux Wood Venetian Blinds
Faux Wood Venetian Blinds are constructed to have the look and feel of a real wooden blind but with the increased practicality and durability provided by their polymer construction. They come in a wide variety of styles, colours and textures, and due to their polymer construction, Faux Wooden blinds are moisture resistant and perfect for rooms with high humidity, such as kitchens or bathrooms.
Metal Venetian Blinds
Metal Venetian Blinds are constructed using lightweight aluminium slats which are highly flexible, durable and light. Metal Venetian Blinds can be manufactured in a vast array of designs, colours and finishes, and due to their coating can be used in high moisture areas of the home. The slim slat profile allows the blind to be retracted more fully than wooden/faux-wooden allowing you to flood the room with more light.
