Stand next to a window on a cold winter's day and you'll soon feel it - the glass is often the coldest spot in the room. Before you reach for the thermostat, take a look at what's covering that window. The right blind adds a warmer layer between you and the glass, so what your blind is made of matters just as much as how it looks.
Our thermal blinds come in Roman, pleated and Perfect Fit pleated styles. We've put together this handy guide to explain how they work and the advantages of them with our picks for each room.
Roman blinds - it's all in the lining
Every Roman blind in our range gives you a choice of two linings when you order.
Standard lining is a lightweight, semi-translucent fabric. With the blind down, it softly filters the daylight coming in.
Blackout Thermal lining blocks out light and adds extra thickness to help insulate your room. That gives you a cosy feeling in winter. It also helps keep the room cool in summer, so it's useful all year round. Lowered, a Roman blind sits as a smooth panel of fabric across the window. Raised, it gathers into soft folds at the top. It's a lovely way to dress a window in fabric and texture. With Blackout Thermal lining it also adds a warm layer over the glass once you lower it in the evening.
Honeycomb pleated blinds - warmth built into the fabric
Honeycomb blinds, also called cellular blinds, are a type of pleated blind made from two layers of fabric that form a row of small cells. Air is trapped inside those cells, helping keep heat in during winter and out in summer.
Our Amalfi Blackout honeycomb fabrics are both thermal and blackout, designed to block out as much light as possible when the blind is down. When you raise a pleated blind it folds into a small, neat stack, so you keep more of the window clear during the day.
Bedroom - warm and dark for a good night's sleep
In the bedroom you want the room to stay warm and dark through the night, so blackout matters just as much as warmth. Both options below give you warmth and blackout.
Because every blind is made to measure, it's made to the sizes you send us, so it fits your window properly rather than being the nearest stock size.
Living room - soft fabric for cosy evenings
The living room is where a Roman blind really comes into its own. Lower it in the evening for privacy and you've got a warm, soft layer over the glass while you relax.
-
Hemsley Ivory Roman Blind is a creamy ivory with a gentle woven-effect texture that suits almost any room. Choose Standard lining if you'd like soft, filtered daylight when the blind is down, or Blackout Thermal lining for that extra thickness.
-
Hemsley Sage Green Roman Blind is a muted sage green in the same soft woven-effect fabric, for a calm, relaxed look.
Dining room and study - a tidy thermal pleat
If you'd like a blind that folds away neatly during the day, a thermal pleated blind is a good fit for a dining room or study.
-
Budapest Beige Stone Pleated Blind is an easy natural beige that works with bold colour schemes and earthy ones alike. Its thermal fabric is an added bonus on colder nights.
Got uPVC windows?
If you'd rather not drill into uPVC frames, the same Amalfi Blackout honeycomb fabric is available as a Perfect Fit pleated blind. It sits in its own white frame close to the glass. You measure the glass rather than the recess.
Before you order
Start with our how to measure for blinds guide, then follow the measuring guide on the product page for the blind you've chosen. Use a metal tape measure and check each measurement twice. If you're fitting inside the recess, measure the width and drop in three places and send us the smallest of each - we'll make the deductions for you. For Perfect Fit, our Perfect Fit measuring guide shows you how to measure the glass.
Want to feel the fabric before you decide? Order up to 10 free samples. They're sent out within one day, so you can hold them up at the window in daylight and again in the evening with the lights on.
Every blind comes with our 5 Year Guarantee. You'll find the despatch time for each blind on its product page.
When you're ready, browse our full thermal blinds range and find the right fabric for each window in your home.
